Chapter 86 - Reishi Bound, Soul Reversed

All eyes were fixed on the reishi-forged heart.

To construct a physical structure out of one's own reishi was no simple feat—it required immense precision, calculation, and control. To forge a functioning heart at the nexus of thousands of delicate reishi threads was something closer to alchemy than Kaidō.

Shingyōji Ōgi stared blankly at the glowing heart, lips parting in disbelief.

"How... how did he do this..."

Shin gave no answer. Unohana's earlier suspicion was accurate—his Zanpakutō did indeed possess a form of reversal.

But what she didn't know... was that it wasn't his only Zanpakutō.

Shingyōji ignored the stares around him and approached the floating orb. He reached out to touch the radiant white heart.

The moment his palm brushed one of the connected threads, they disintegrated instantly. He paid no mind and pressed his hand directly to the heart.

His eyes widened.

"No... this isn't possible..."

When he attempted to channel reishi into it, the heart repelled him.

It rejected all foreign energy—because it was already a complete, self-contained structure.

To construct something like this under time pressure, in front of an audience, without a single error...

It shattered everything Shingyōji thought he knew.

And Tachikawa Shin had done it.

He staggered back a step, hands suddenly cold, his breath caught.

Shin watched him, then turned to Kotetsu Isane.

"Vice-Captain Kotetsu, shall we move to the judgment?"

Isane blinked herself back to awareness. But instead of replying, she instinctively looked toward Unohana.

What Shin had done defied procedure—defied principle. She didn't dare rule on it alone.

But just then, a voice broke the silence.

"I lost."

The crowd exploded in murmurs.

No one had expected this outcome. Many had speculated wild scenarios—maybe a narrow win, maybe a miracle draw—but Shin winning outright, and in such a way?

Unthinkable.

Shingyōji slowly stepped forward until he stood before Shin. His expression was conflicted—a cocktail of admiration, confusion, and humility.

"With reishi control like that... You win. Tachikawa, if you continue down the path of Kaidō, your accomplishments will one day astound all of Soul Society."

Shin bowed politely.

"Your praise honors me, Senpai."

Shingyōji turned to Unohana, bowed low.

"Captain, I concede without reservation."

Unohana's expression didn't shift. She simply gave a soft nod and turned her head.

"Isane."

"Yes, Captain!"

Isane stepped forward without summoning the other seated officers.

"Tachikawa Shin has successfully restored 2,000 reishi threads. Victory."

No one was surprised now. But the courtyard still buzzed with whispers and wonder.

Shingyōji exhaled. He knew what was coming.

He had seen Shin's Zanpakutō in action that day. The next trial—Emergency Healing—would likely go the same way. Better to face it head-on.

"Captain... may we begin with the Emergency Healing round?"

The lower-ranked squad members were puzzled, but the seated officers went still.

If Shin won again, there would be no need for the third trial. And while many could accept his win in Kaidō, no one believed he could outperform Shingyōji in pharmacology. This gesture... was a hand extended.

Shin understood that too. His opinion of Shingyōji rose a notch.

Unohana fell silent for a moment, her gaze lingering on Shin.

"I have no objections," Shin said.

Isane called out to squad members. The orbs were removed. Replacements were brought in.

Two artificial humanoid bodies were laid on the operating tables. They were pale, featureless, and eerily lifelike—no eyes, no mouth.

Shin recognized them at once.

Modified souls.

Creations of the 12th Division once again.

Nearby lay an array of medical tools—scalpels, clamps, gauze, sterilizers.

Isane began the explanation.

"These modified soul bodies replicate the internal structure of a living human. We will now inflict identical injuries on both, after which the participants will perform treatment. Victory will be based on the thoroughness of healing and time required."

Two seated officers stepped forward, scalpels in hand.

Each body was methodically cut—some wounds shallow, others deep, reaching muscle and bone. The officers then used Kaidō to inflict internal damage, creating ruptures in tissue and spirit veins.

Once both bodies were evenly wounded, Shin and Shingyōji approached to inspect them. The damage was nearly identical.

Isane placed the timer.

As preparations finished, both healers rested a hand on the hilt of their Zanpakutō.

Shingyōji acted first.

"Grow rampant, Aogiri."

Light burst from his blade. The plain Asauchi shortened and reshaped into a wakizashi. A green ring of light expanded from its center, enveloping the entire table.

Under its glow, the soul body's wounds began to close rapidly. Even the wooden table beneath began to sprout tiny buds and shoots.

Shin's eyes widened. It was the first time he'd seen a healing-type Zanpakutō released in action.

Shingyōji suspended his blade mid-air, manipulating it with both hands as it radiated restorative energy, accelerating the soul body's regeneration.

A blade that heals flesh and makes wood bloom... impressive.

Its effects were rooted in natural acceleration—stimulating growth, cellular repair, regeneration.

It was powerful, elegant. And yet...

Shingyōji moved with utmost focus. He knew already—this wasn't enough.

Shin waited, watching.

Then he slowly unsheathed his Asauchi. No chant. No Shikai.

He simply laid the blade across the chest of the injured body.

"Reishi bound to here. The soul... reversed to there."

The blade flared white.

And before the audience could blink, the injuries vanished.

Every cut. Every rupture. Gone.

Shin slid the sword back into its sheath.

"I'm finished."
