Chapter 61: Devil

Shen Lou’s team is wearing white longsleeves with different styles. Shen Lou has a long sleeve on his left arm while his right arm is sleeveless. The three buttons on his shirt are unbuttoned, thus revealing his collarbone making him exude a slight abstinent yet sexy like temperament. Paired with long black pants, he looks like someone who’s out straight from a comic book. In addition, they also notice that he’s wearing a silver earring on his right ear, it’s shining like a starlight amidst the dark atmosphere.

The background of their team is an old laboratory setting. There are computers around the desk and chairs with virtual holograms hanging in the air made by their mental powers. What was the most eye-catching was in the center, there is a bright red apple inside a protective glass. It seems to be the subject that they want to study.

In the beginning of their performance, they also did a little play just like what He Yan’s team did. Each of them seems to be busy studying in front of either the computers and the documents scattered around.

Until Qin An stood up and walked closer to the apple.

Everyone’s eyes were glued to the young man in front. He was wearing a white long sleeves with a long extended cloth hanging behind as if it was a long white coat of a doctor. His right hand was wearing a white glove covering the slender pale hand which he raised and gently slid his finger on the protective glass while his other hand was inside his pocket. If it weren’t for the two unbuttoned buttons on his upper collar revealing a bit of his delicate skin inside him, he seems like a cold and stoic scientist from a thriller mystery novel.

Time seems to stop except for the young man who slowly opens the protective cover and stretches out his gloved hand towards the bright red apple. Qin An successfully caught the apple and brought it closer towards his lips.

The audience didn’t know but they seemed to hear a loud heartbeat beside their ears as their eyes glued towards the apple that seemed to seduce them. It’s clearly just like an ordinary apple but they also seem to smell the fresh and sweet scent, enticing them to take a bite.

Qin An’s eyes were lowered and he stared at the apple on his hand for a second before he slowly put the apple on his lips. Just as everyone thought he’ll take a bite, the alarm suddenly sounded and the teammates around him seemed to awaken and look sharply at the traitor who tried to steal their precious apple.

The nine members quickly surrounded Qin An but the latter didn’t seem to care. His thin lips were still kissing the apple skin, obviously wanting to take a bite if it weren’t for the sudden disturbance. Qin An stilled for a few seconds before he slowly raised his gaze.

Everyone held their breath when they met the pair of dark orbs that appeared to be bottomless, seemingly wanting anyone for it to sink into the abyss willingly for him.

Then, a slow yet rhythmic piano tune begins to start. The nine members also face the audience and Shen Lou opens his lips to officially begin their performance.

"Walking to the aisle of darkness

Here I am caged in the abyss

There’s a monster, monster

But I’m more than a monster..."

Save Me is a song about a devil who’s longing for its own freedom. A devil who doesn’t want to be entangled with the darkness that he’s been with in all his life. Here, Shen Lou’s team also begins to let the audience feel their inner shouts as if they were a real devil.

A silent cry of a devil who wants to break free from all the shackles on his body.

Qin An put back the apple inside the protective glass and joined the dance with the team. He turned and went in the middle while doing a perfect execution of the steps and he also sang his part.

"Chains around me keep on tighten’

Surely keeping me inside this darkness..." Qin An ran his hands on his neck as if someone was strangling him. He showed an expression of being in pain but his eyes were firm and determined to be awakened.

"But I’ll break the oath

And taste the sweetness on my lips right now..."

When they were in a meeting, Shen Lou asked them what concept they wanted to change to their song. After hearing from He Yan’s team, they also thought about changing it. Although it’s surely a risk, they are still eager to take this chance.

At that moment, Qin An suddenly thought about the myths that he heard from humans on Earth. Back then, he once guided a monk. That monk told him that there are many mysteries around the world. Different stories about how everything existed to give reasons to humans.

One of the stories that he told him was about a myth from the West about a legend about the first man and woman in this world, Adam and Eve. He told him that they are the first pair of humans who was created by God and was given a chance to live in the paradise that everyone seems to dream of dreaming to live after death.

The monk said that it was Eve who found the forbidden tree and saw the apple that the God forsaken them to have. A devil who disguised as a snake lured Eve to take a bite and offered Adam to take one too. Thus, God punished them and they were forced to leave paradise. Since then, Adam and Eve who ate the forbidden fruit awakened the knowledge about the good and evil and hence had their own will to decide their own actions.

From that story, Qin An thought that Adam and Eve can also be compared to the song. Someone who was tempted to take a bite from the apple. Was it just like in the song wherein a devil wants to have the forbidden thing— the freedom?

That even if there’s full of uncertainties of what will happen after taking a bite, as long as there’s a chance to be free, a devil is willing to trade everything.

That is how the concept of an apple came. Then, it was from the other members who offered other ideas such as the setting inside the laboratory and their clothes.

"Save me from this abyss

Thy devil will plead mercy

Save me, save me..."

Qin An thought about himself. Did he want someone to save him from that life too? Was the indifference inside him a mask to save himself from drowning in the endless darkness?

Was he that devil who’s longing to taste the sweetness on an apple too?

Maybe it is.

Maybe it really is.
