Chapter 83: You Have A Girlfriend?

Nathaniel and Martha agreed with Walter, both looking at Sawyer and waiting for him to respond.

However, Sawyer continued to give them the silent treatment.

"What your father said is right, Sawyer," Martha added impatiently, hoping to encourage him to speak. She placed her hand on his to draw his attention. Meeting Sawyer’s calm gaze, she continued, "Serena won’t reject your proposal this time, dear. Trust Grandma, okay?"

"Yes, Sawyer, if you’re worried that Serena will reject you, I can talk to her grandfather to ensure she will not..." Nathaniel chimed in, trying to help his wife convince Sawyer. "But don’t worry too much because, from what I hear from Old Philips, he is the one who’s urging Serena to settle down with you."

Feeling increasingly frustrated by their insistence, Sawyer finally spoke up.

"Grandpa, Grandma, please stop! Just stop with that idea!" Sawyer said calmly, though he was struggling to suppress his anger. He didn’t want to disrespect these two people he loved, but he also couldn’t let them dictate his life, especially when choosing the woman who would become his wife.

Neither of them said anything as they looked at each other. Sawyer felt a slight calm envelop him, but when his gaze fell on his father, his emotions stirred again.

"And Father, you don’t have to worry about my future. It’s my decision who I want to marry, if I choose to marry at all. If you’re concerned about our family lineage, you can ask Harvey. He is the face and the family’s future, not me."

Sawyer’s eyes remained locked on his father, who seemed to tremble slightly, on the verge of saying something, but no words came out.

Clenching his fist tightly, Sawyer continued, "So, stop trying to be a good father by arranging a marriage for me and pressuring me to return to help the company. I’m old enough to make my own decisions without your assistance."

"Sawyer, dear, you can’t talk like that to—" Martha began to protest, but her words faltered as she saw her grandson shoot her a cold glance.

"Grandma, please let me finish my words." Sawyer turned to look at his Grandma. There was no more anger in his tone, but a cold aura still lingered in his gaze.

"Brat! Don’t scold your Grandma!" Nathaniel Jones snapped, fixing his sharp gaze on Sawyer.

"I’m not, Grandpa. How could I scold my Grandma? She is the one who has always loved me. And I know she loves me more than my parents ever could," Sawyer replied helplessly. "I wouldn’t even think about scolding Grandma. All I did was that I needed to finish expressing my opinion..." He took a deep breath to suppress his frustration.

After a moment of silence, Sawyer continued, "Countless times, I’ve told you I will decide whom I will marry. You don’t need to worry or tire yourselves out searching for a woman for me." He said this to his grandpa before turning to look at his father.

"I’m clearly saying that it’s not my responsibility to continue this family line, Dad. You should talk to Harvey about this. He is the one who will carry on the Jones family empire. I’ve been out of that picture since I was a teenager, and you know it." The light in Sawyer’s eyes flashed angrily, recalling the past he could never forget.

Walter Jones could only clench his fists, unable to respond to his youngest son’s words because all of Sawyer’s words felt like daggers piercing his heart.

"And Grandpa, please stop trying to set me up with Serena. There’s no more story left between us, and if you think I will return to her, you are mistaken. I won’t go back to her. This is my firm answer to you."

Nathaniel Jones was taken aback by the strength of his grandson’s words. However, as a grandfather, he had to remind him, "Sawyer, I understand your position on this matter. But you are thirty-five years old now. You need to settle down and start your own family..."

"I know that, Grandpa. Thank you for your concern, but I will handle that on my own. As you mentioned, I’m thirty-five—old enough to take care of myself, as I should," Sawyer said with a faint smile.

Martha felt gloomy when she heard that Sawyer was no longer interested in returning to Serena. As his grandmother, she could only respect his decision.

"Sawyer, I’m sorry if we pressured you too much. But Grandma only wanted you to have a wife, to have someone who will spend your life with you until you are old," Martha said, her eyes damp as she met Sawyer’s gaze. "I just want you to be happy and not lead a lonely life as you do now, my dear..."

Sawyer’s hard heart slowly softened when he saw his grandmother holding back her tears. Although he disagreed with what she was trying to do, he couldn’t be angry with her.

"Grandma, Serena is not the only woman I know. Even if I have no future with her, I have one with someone else..." Sawyer paused as he noticed the surprise and curiosity reflected in his grandmother’s wide eyes.

A smile spread across Martha’s lips, clearly showing her relief. "So, you have a girlfriend?" she asked, her voice trembling with relief as she grabbed Sawyer’s hand.

"Yes, I have a woman I want to marry. So you don’t have to be sad knowing I’m growing old alone. I won’t be alone, Grandma..." A smile spread across Sawyer’s face as Abigail’s image filled his mind.

"Heaven! So it’s true?" Nathaniel said in surprise at Sawyer’s words. "Brat, tell me you’re not trying to avoid this conversation, are you?"

Sawyer chuckled, his gaze shifting to Grandpa, and he no longer looked as annoyed as before.

"No, Grandpa, I met her recently. But I won’t bring her here anytime soon. I’m worried you guys will scare her off, and she’ll run away from me..."

"Hahaha, no need to rush, Sawyer... No need to rush..." Nathaniel laughed heartily at his grandson’s words. Although he felt sorry that Sawyer wouldn’t return to his best friend’s granddaughter, he was happy to hear that he had found a girl he wanted to marry.

Though Sawyer felt relieved, worry soon crept back into his heart. Abigail still hadn’t answered his proposal, which made him want to rush to her and propose again.
