Chapter 77: Misunderstanding
"Did something happen? Why aren’t you asleep yet?" he added, glancing at his watch. "It’s almost midnight, Abby," his voice filled with worry.
"I’m thirsty and need to drink some water," she answered nonchalantly.
Abigail was amused by how handsome he looked even when he had just awakened and was panicking.
"Okay, wait here. I’ll get it for you." Sawyer left her before she could respond. Not long after, he returned with two water bottles and handed them to her.
"Alright, you can head back upstairs. Go to sleep; we’ll leave this cabin tomorrow morning. Don’t stay up too late..."
When Abigail didn’t move from her spot, Sawyer’s brow furrowed slightly.
"Do you need anything else? A midnight snack, maybe?" he asked jokingly.
"No," Abigail shook her head slowly.
After some thought, Abigail realized she couldn’t let Sawyer sleep in the chair all night. He would have to drive for three hours tomorrow to return to the capital.
In this situation, Abigail had two choices: let him sleep in the next cabin, more than thirty yards from this cabin, and leave her alone. Or she invites him to sleep upstairs with her.
"What’s wrong, Abby?" Sawyer asked.
"Sawyer, you can’t sleep here. Please, sleep with me upstairs."
Sawyer’s face instantly froze upon hearing Abigail’s words. He swallowed hard and stepped back to look at her more clearly, trying to ensure she wasn’t sleepwalking. How could she ask him to sleep with her?
However, after confirming she was fully awake and aware, his whole body went tense.
’My lord, Abby wants me to sleep with her? Seriously? Why did she suddenly change her mind? Did she want me to wait? What just happened?’
Countless questions swirled in his mind, leaving him bewildered.
He couldn’t help but ask before assuming, worried that the sentence he heard from Abigail was just his imagination.
"Abby, do you want me to sleep with you upstairs?"
Abigail nodded while gripping the water bottle in her hand. She was embarrassed to see Sawyer staring at her with a look that made her heart tremble.
Sawyer held back his happy smile, not wanting to look overly excited that Abigail finally opened her heart to him. Not only did she open her heart, but she wanted to skip all those things and ask him to sleep with her.
’God! Thank you. But I’m a gentleman! I won’t do that to her. She is my future wife; I can’t do something I will regret in the future.’
Sawyer tried hard to suppress his other desires.
Smiling gently, he put his hand on her shoulders, making her look him in the eyes before he said:
"Abby, I’m sorry if I lost my mind a few times and forced you to become my wife. But you have to believe me. I could wait until you are ready. There’s no need to pressure yourself to accept me, Abby, especially now that you want us to sleep together."
Abigail slightly frowned, hearing his words.
When Sawyer saw her frown, seeming not to like his words, he tried to explain again in simple terms.
"Thank you for opening your heart to me, Abby, but sleeping together is too fast for us. Or are you really ready to sleep with me tonight?" He smiled gently at her.
Instantly, Abigail’s face turned pale as if there was a lump in her throat upon hearing his suggestive words. She realized this man misunderstood her.
"Wait, wait, Sawyer, wait," she raised her hand to stop him from continuing his nonsense.
Abigail was confused beyond words; how did he assume she wanted to sleep with him?
She had asked him to sleep upstairs with her, but she meant for him to sleep on the sofa while she slept on the bed.
’Gosh! Sawyer Jones, I cannot believe you also have a wild imagination like me.’ She faintly laughed inwardly at this hilarious situation.
"Is there anything you want to discuss before we sleep together?" Sawyer’s question added fire to Abigail’s heart. He blinked several times, his hand still holding her shoulders, waiting for her answer.
They stood so close that Abigail felt the temperature increase, making her feel her body heat up.
Abigail swallowed hard, locking eyes with Sawyer.
"Sawyer, I’m sorry, but I think you misunderstood..." Abigail said, feeling guilty as she noticed the shock and confusion on his face.
"Abby, could you explain a bit more?" he asked.
"When I mentioned sleeping together, I didn’t mean that I was asking you to do that. I mean, you know..."
Sawyer suddenly felt embarrassed, recalling what he had said earlier. He wished he could turn back time and stop his past self from speaking so thoughtlessly.
After trying to clear his mind, he replied, "I’m sorry if I misheard, but I distinctly remember you asking me to sleep with you, Abby."
"I did ask you that," Abigail said, feeling terrible that he misunderstood her. "But I meant to sleep in the same room, not on the same bed..."
"Aah, I get it. Sorry, Abby..." Sawyer replied, feeling ashamed. He ran his fingers through his hair, trying to hide his embarrassment. "My brain is sometimes too creative. I’m sorry for making you worry."
Abigail shifted her gaze from him to her toes, unable to look at him any longer. She knew what he was thinking and shamelessly thought about it, too—cuddling in his warm embrace all night.
"Alright, you can go upstairs first; I’ll follow you soon—"
Abigail could only nod before rushing toward the bedroom. She closed the door behind her, pressed her hand over her chest, and tried to calm her racing heartbeat.
’My lord...’ Abigail thought, giggling as she recalled what had happened downstairs. She still couldn’t believe it. She had gone downstairs to get water bottles to drink, but she brought back not just water bottles. She brought Sawyer, too.
’Abby, oh, Abby, you are so fearless. How could you invite a normal, mature man to sleep in the same bedroom as you? Can you handle this? He’s attractive and—’
"Abby, can I come in now?"
