Betrayed by Fiance, Embraced by Hidden Tycoon-Chapter 68: I Promise You
Chapter 68: I Promise You
A few times, Sophie asks Abigail to let her out of the nursing home and rent a small studio apartment. Still, Abigail refuses because she is concerned about Sophie’s health.
"Granny, I already have a job that pays decent," Abigail says. She doesn’t want to discuss her new job at the cafe in detail, fearing it might shock her grandmother.
With a reassuring smile, she adds, "And I also have a new place to live." She wants to ease Grandma’s worries.
"Abby, let me live with you. There’s no need to spend so much money on this place. I can’t let you work too hard to pay for my nursing home when I can live with you. It’s too much for you. It’s not your responsibility to take care of me," Sophie sincerely expresses her feelings.
"Oh, please, Granny, stop bringing this up. I can’t let you out now. You know I pay for this nursing home every year, right?" Abigail isn’t completely honest with her grandmother. She deliberately says this to make Grandma stay and stop asking to leave the nursing home.
Deep in her heart, Abigail longed to live with Grandma, but her health was the top priority. Life in the middle of the city was terrible for Grandma’s well-being. While here? Grandma could engage in activities with friends her age and enjoy clean air in this quieter place.
Abigail dreamed of one day owning a lovely house where she could afford to hire a dedicated maid and a dedicated nurse to care for Grandma. If she could make that happen, she would definitely bring Grandma to live with her.
For now, she focused on working harder in her industry to earn money and fulfill her dream of buying a beautiful property in a remote area with clean air and a healthy environment.
Sophie took a deep breath as she listened to Abigail’s words.
"Abby, please tell me we’ll stay together, under one roof, next year! I don’t care if we live in a small apartment as long as I can be beside you. Please promise me that..." Sophie said nervously, looking at Abigail.
All this time, she had understood Abigail’s refusal because of Ryland. She couldn’t be with them. But now, Abigail was alone, and Sophie desperately wanted to accompany her. Loneliness can ruin a young person’s soul.
Abigail was hesitant to make the promise. She worried that if she returned to the architecture and construction industry, she might be unable to stay in one place, as her clients could be from this city, this country, or worldwide.
And she couldn’t leave Grandma alone in the house if she traveled to another city or another country.
She would not have enough money to pay for a maid and nurses unless she had enough time. But to have that privilege would take more time than she had. Now, she felt confused about how to respond to her grandmother.
"Abby, it seems like you don’t love me anymore. Is that why you left this old woman in this nursing home? To be away from you?" Sophie’s sad words pierced Abigail’s heart.
"Granny, how could you think that?" Abigail’s eyes blurred with tears. "I insist you stay here so you will have someone to care for you and your health. I promise we will live together, in my home, once I have a house and enough money to hire a living-in-house nurse and a maid."
Sophie smiled gently as she rubbed Abigail’s red cheeks, wiping away her tears.
"Oh, Abby. I knew it. I’m sorry if I make you cry. No need to rush, dear. No need to rush. I’m just teasing you. I know you will thrive in this world, and I know when you are ready, we will live under one roof. I pray that God will let me live long enough to see that happen." Sophie looked at Abigail with loving eyes.
"Thank you, Granny. And don’t even think of leaving me alone now. I want you to live to see your grandson-in-law and my kids. A lot of kids. To play with them in the garden of our house, together. Please, Granny. Don’t even think about leaving me until then!" Abigail said between her tears.
Sophie’s eyes sparkled at Abigail’s promise. "Oh, Abby. I pray you will move on from Ryland and find someone better. Hmmm....Do you already have someone in mind?" she suddenly asked with an acute curiosity of a parent.
Abigail immediately scolded herself in her mind for talking too much; she almost revealed about Sawyer.
’Gosh! Abby, stop talking, or you’ll be in trouble if you accidentally mention his name to Granny. She might insist on meeting him right away!’ Abigail silently scolds herself while maintaining a calm and composed gesture in front of Grandma.
"Who is the lucky man who could heal your heart, dear? Please tell me more; Granny wants to know!"
Abigail smiled calmly.
"I’ll try to find a more handsome and kind man, Granny. Please pray for me. I hope God grants me one," she replied casually, though for some reason, Sawyer’s face kept appearing in her mind with every word she spoke. She swallowed hard, feeling her throat suddenly dry.
Sophie laughed happily.
"Oh dear Abby, this old granny will always pray for you. I pray every night before I go to bed. And every morning when I wake up. If you find a much better man, introduce him to Granny immediately. Promise me?" Sophie playfully said.
"Sure, Granny..."
"Oh, alright. I want to give you something before my old mind forgets...would you hand me a box from inside my left nightstand’s drawer?" Sophie asked Abigail to take a black velvet box from the drawer on the nightstand.
Although confused by her grandmother’s sudden request, Abigail immediately went to the nightstand and opened the drawer.
There, she saw several small diaries neatly arranged, several small boxes, and one black velvet box the size of a medium-sized book. This was the first time Abigail saw the box.
"This one, grandma?" She lifted the velvet box to show it to her grandmother.
"Yes, that one! Hurry up and bring it here," Sophie said excitedly.
