Chapter 33: As Good As Hers

"No," replied Alicia, lifting her head off René’s chest and taking his hand in her own. "I might not agree with them all the time, but those guys would lay down their lives for you. You know that."

René nodded his head, the weight on his chest lifting as he guided Alicia toward the armory. A part of him was worried that maybe their loyalty had shifted somewhat after the arrival of the girl, but if Alicia hadn’t seen that as part of the future, at least he knew he could still trust them.

"Those people who will betray you aren’t worth your time or the effort it would take to kill them. Simply leave them be and let nature take its course," he advised, opening the massive door in front of them.

Every last weapon in the building was kept under lock and key inside of a giant cage inside of an even bigger cage. Usually, only one person would have the key to the door, but he knew where the spare key was kept.

"LaPierre?" called out a man’s voice, and René’s head snapped up. Just on the other side of the first cage stood Gary Savoy, the man in charge of the armory. "Is that you, boy?"

"Savoy," called out René, unable to keep the smile out of his voice. "I’m surprised you are still alive. You are two days older than dirt, after all."

"I’s be retirin’ tomorrow," Gary admitted with a shrug before pulling up his sleeve and showing off a blackening wound. "Ain’t that always the case?"

"I’m sorry," replied René, pulling Alicia closer to him. It was clear that a zombie had somehow managed to bite Gary, probably when he was reaching through the little window to take someone’s gun. It was such a shame that he wouldn’t be able to enjoy his retirement.

The man had been an amazing officer and an even better friend. He had taught him and his brothers everything they knew, and it was painful to see him like this.

"Is there anything I can do?" he continued, looking at Gary. While everyone in the room knew he was dying, the man still had his trademark grin on his face.

"I donna know what be goin’ on in the outside world right now, but I’ma thinkin’ I prefer a bullet to the ’ead more than fendin’ for myself," replied Gary. "I’ve unlocked the cages; take wha’ yous be needin’."

"Thank you," sighed René, taking out his firearm and pointing it at Gary. "Thank you for your service, mon ami. May you find peace on your final journey."

"I’ma gonna home to Mary-Lynn, hows that not a good thing?" smiled Gary, his eyes filling with tears as he stared at the gun. "Gotta admit... I was too much of a coward to do it myself. Thanks for dis, an’ I be sorry for makin’ ya do it."

"It’s my honor," replied René, trying to get past the lump in his throat.

A single bullet ended Gary’s pain, but René wasn’t able to hide his tears.

Giving him a moment to collect himself, Alicia opened the cage doors, intent on taking every last gun she could.

René was torn away from his memories of Gary at Alicia’s frustrated bellow.

"Everything okay in here?" demanded René, rushing forward.

"They’re all gone!" growled Alicia, clearly not impressed that every last spot on the wall to hold a gun was empty. "How the hell are they all gone?"

"Maybe Gary signed them out when shit hit the fan," murmured René, rubbing Alicia’s arms to try and calm her down. "Check the drawers. I’ll go around to where the bullets are stored. There has to be some there. It would be completely impossible for someone to take them all."

Alicia grunted before she started frantically opening and closing every drawer, getting more and more frustrated with every one that came up empty.

The promise of guns was the only reason why she didn’t fight coming here first. After all, it was on their way, so might as well get whatever supplies she could.

She had been stockpiling for the last 10 years, so she had more than enough supplies to keep herself satisfied for the rest of her life, but there was no such thing as too many supplies!

She wanted more, goddamnit.

"The bullets are gone, too," murmured René, looking a bit shell-shocked at that idea. "Not a single bullet left."

"This isn’t possible," replied Alicia, spinning around in the cage to see what she might have missed. No single person could carry all of the guns and bullets in a police station. Plus Gary would have said something to them if there was nothing left. ƒreewebɳovel.com

Which meant that Gary didn’t know everything was gone.

Alicia paused, her mind taking in all the information in front of her. The only way this place could have been cleaned out like this was if someone was a space user. But even then, the user would need to be able to see the supplies before taking them.

In her last life, the most powerful space user could snap his fingers to collect the supplies, but he still had to see them. If Luca was the second most powerful space user, then no one would dare claim they were first.

Even she had to be able to touch the object before being able to put it into her space.

And besides, there was no way Luca would know about his powers yet. Even Dimitri, who had already manifested his metal powers, didn’t understand what was going on until she told him. He attributed it to luck.

Well, Dimitri might be the hottest of all seven of them, but he wasn’t known for his brains.

Could Luca have already figured out what he could do? Was that why he wasn’t in here with them?

Even after all this time, they still didn’t like her as much as René did. They all assumed that she would pick only one of them, so when René stepped up to ask her out, the rest of them backed off.

They didn’t understand that a few years after the zombies came, it was only normal for one woman to have multiple men. The men outnumbered the females 15-1. Not even the teenagers were spared the humiliation if they weren’t part of an official bond.

Shaking her head, Alicia grabbed René and left the station, intent on getting on the road. Since Luca had the weapons, they were as good as hers now, anyway.
