Chapter 264 Takayuki Playing Koro-Cool
Takayuki Kageyama sat back in his chair, stretching his arms as he contemplated what game to play next. After the intense battles of Megaman, he needed something fresh, something he hadn't experienced before. It was still Sunday afternoon, and he had plenty of time. His eyes landed on a game box with striking cover art. The protagonist, a young man with a blade-like arm, was mid-action, slashing through eerie-looking green-skinned creatures with black eyes. The game's title—Koro-Cool—stood bold against the sci-fi background.
He flipped the box over, noticing the PG-12 rating in the corner. That was unusual for a ZAGE game. Curiosity piqued, he popped the cartridge into his ZEPS console. But as the game loaded, he noticed something odd—there was no Zabo-man card inside the box. Instead, there were four things: the game cartridge, a ZEPS Wow! insert detailing ZEPS games that have been released used to be called ZEPS Volumes, a full game manual, and a thank-you card from the developer Kako-Go.
"Kako-Go?" Takayuki muttered, tilting his head. "Wait... isn't this a ZAGE game? But it's not made by Zaboru? That's different..." There are information that Zaboru is just Supporting Kako-go.
Unlike Karate Bunny, which had been developed by an external third-party, this was a ZAGE-developed game, yet it lacked Zabo-man's signature presence. What he didn't realize was that Zaboru had made a conscious decision to keep Zabo-man exclusive to his own projects, ensuring that other ZAGE developers wouldn't feel overshadowed.
Shaking off his confusion, Takayuki pressed start, and an engaging 8-bit theme played. The title Koro-Cool flashed on the screen, followed by two options: Start and a greyed-out Continue. He selected Start, and a lengthy 8-bit cinematic began.
A Text narrated the story: Earth had been invaded by a ruthless alien race called Poli-Men. These beings enslaved humanity, waging war against Earth's resistance for years. Our Hero, Korosi, was one of the many who stood against them. But during a failed battle against the Poli-Men High-General Zatsu, he was captured. Zatsu, wielding an ability known as Dimensional Slash, severed both of Korosi's arms, leaving him to die and throw him to the sea. However, Korosi managed to survive, Struggle in the harsh Sea.
The screen faded to black, and the next scene showed Korosi waking up inside a high-tech underground facility. He had been saved by a secret resistance group known as the Poli-Vanquisher. One of Their leaders, Mad Scientist Sumaruto Peruson, saw potential in him and performed an experimental procedure—giving him powerful battle prosthetic arms capable of fighting the Poli-Men. With his new weapons, Korosi vowed revenge and began his journey.

Takayuki's eyes widened. "Whoa... this story is actually pretty deep. And dark."
The game then transitioned to gameplay. Korosi now had two blade-like prosthetic arms, and Takayuki began experimenting with the controls. Pressing O unleashed a standard slash, holding O charged up an attack, pressing down while attacking resulted in a crouching strike, and jumping with X followed by O allowed for an aerial attack.
"Huh, controls feel kinda similar to Z-Man... but with a heavier impact."
The first stage took place on an archipelago, with Korosi navigating through coastal cliffs and attacking Poli-Men soldiers armed with guns and swords. Each enemy bled blue upon defeat then their body part Severed, the pixelated effect giving the game a satisfyingly grim tone. The sound effects were crisp, and the music was catchy, driving home the urgency of the battle.
"Damn, this is satisfying!" Takayuki grinned, slashing through multiple enemies in quick succession.
After fighting and platformed his way through the stage, he encountered his first boss—Poli-Men General Trazack. A short 8-bit cutscene played, showing the imposing figure standing atop a rocky cliff.
"Vanquisher! You shall pay for slaughtering my kin!" Trazack bellowed.
The battle began, and Trazack immediately activated an energy shield, making him impervious to normal attacks. At the same time, he launched a series of fast-moving projectiles at Korosi. Takayuki quickly realized that only charged attacks could break the shield. He had to time his attacks carefully, avoiding incoming fire while charging up and delivering precise slashes. After several intense exchanges, he landed the final blow, and Trazack let out a roar before exploding into blue fragments.
"Heh, pretty easy!" Takayuki smirked.
But instead of moving directly to the next stage, a small mini-rocket landed next to Korosi, offering him a choice: Back to Base or Continue. Takayuki hesitated. "Why would I need to go back to base? Is this a trap?"
Curious, he selected Back to Base, and the game loaded into Sumaruto Peruson's laboratory. To his surprise, he was able to upgrade Korosi's prosthetic arms using Vanquisher Coins—a currency obtained by defeating enemies and bosses. There were multiple upgrade paths:
+1 Attack Damage+1 Range Increase+1 Charge Attack PowerSpecial Enhancements from General Orbs
Trazack had dropped an item called Trazack General Orb upon defeat. Sumaruto Peruson explained that integrating General Orbs into Korosi's Weapons would grant him new abilities, which could be activated using Left, Down, Right, and Square inputs.
Takayuki selected the Trazack Orb, and Korosi's prosthetic arms briefly glowed. A new ability—Energy Shield—had been unlocked. This ability nullified two incoming attacks, giving him an extra layer of protection.
"Whoa, this is actually really cool!" Takayuki exclaimed. "I can customize my character's fighting style? This is deeper than I expected."
After enhancing his sword prosthetics with increased damage and range, he returned to the game and proceeded to Stage 2.
The new possibilities excited him. This wasn't just another hack-and-slash game—it had depth, progression, and strategy. He cracked his knuckles and smirked.
"Man, this game is way more intricate than I thought..." he muttered, gripping the controller tighter as he barely dodged a laser blast.
With renewed excitement, he pressed forward, eager to uncover more of Koro-Cool's hidden depths.
"Alright... let's see what this game really has to offer."
To be continued.
