Chapter 289 - 258 Zaboru Small Concert
Sunday 20 April 1992 Morning
Ayumi sighed as she gently fed her pet rabbit in the backyard, lost in thought. She had recently made the decision to leave college and focus entirely on game development, working alongside her brother at Akaishidan. It wasn't just about her career—going to college had always been her father's wish. At first, she obeyed, trying to live up to his expectations, but after that night—the night Zaboru was beaten within an inch of his life—she stopped caring. What did it matter? Her father had shown his true nature, and she realized she had spent too much time following orders rather than making choices for herself. It wasn't just about proving her worth to her father or even to Zaboru. She wanted to prove something to herself.
She had to stand on her own. She needed to show that she could create something meaningful without Zaboru always stepping in to save the day. For all his love and support, he had a habit of taking over, solving problems as if they were trivial, as if nothing could stand in his way. She admired that about him, but she didn't want to just be another person he had to protect. She wanted to be his equal.
Yet, no matter how much she tried to focus on work, the weight of guilt lingered in her heart. No matter how many times Zaboru reassured her, she couldn't shake the memory of her father breaking him down. The image was burned into her mind—Zaboru, standing his ground despite being outmatched, his body tattered, his face full of blood, refusing to back down even as Akira Hamazou, the man known as the Ashura of Hamazou, effortlessly put him through hell. It wasn't that Zaboru was weak—far from it. He had an indomitable will. But her father was on another level, a monster in human form. If Akechi hadn't stepped in that night, she didn't even want to think about what might have happened.
Her grip on the rabbit's food tightened. 'Zaboru must hate me now... How could he not? I'm the daughter of the man who nearly killed him. How could he even look at me the same way?'
She sighed again, her thoughts spiraling, when she suddenly heard footsteps behind her. She turned to see Akechi approaching, his usual sharp expression softened slightly. "Ayumi, come to the hall. There's something you need to see."
Confused, she wiped her hands and followed him.
As they reached the main entrance of Hamazou HQ, she stopped in her tracks. A massive truck was parked in front, a makeshift stage already set up, bright lights illuminating the area. Several members of the Hamazou family and their underlings were gathered, murmuring in curiosity. Ayumi looked to Akechi. "Nii-sama... what is this?"
Akechi only smirked. "Just watch."
Before she could press him further, the truck's rear door slowly opened. Five people stepped forward—four men and one woman, all dressed sharply. And at the very front stood him.
Zaboru.
Her breath caught in her throat. He was standing confidently, microphone in hand, looking as cool as ever. The neon lights on the truck flashed to life, forming glowing letters that read: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AYUMI!
Zaboru raised the mic and called out, "Hello, everyone! My name is Zaboru Renkonan, and I'm Ayumi's boyfriend!"
Gasps and murmurs rippled through the crowd. Some grinned, some chuckled, while others—especially Akira—reacted less favorably. Akira's fists clenched tightly, his teeth grinding in irritation. His wife, Kyouko, placed a calming hand on his arm, but he remained tense. Meanwhile, Azai and Abarai, Akira's father and uncle, erupted into laughter.
"This kid's got some real guts!" Azai bellowed while grinning.
Unfazed by the tension, Zaboru continued, his voice carrying across the courtyard. "Today, I'm here to celebrate Ayumi Hamazou's birthday! And since I could never just give her an ordinary gift, I've prepared something only I can offer—a song! This one's for you, Ayumi! It's called Machine Gun Kiss! Let's go!" (AN: From the Yakuza game Look for it!)
With that, he turned to his band and gave the cue. The opening chords rang out, setting the tone for what was about to be an unforgettable performance. The moment Zaboru started singing, the crowd couldn't help but be drawn in. The melody was infectious, and his voice carried the perfect blend of confidence and passion.

Midnight shadow evaporates Accelerate through this old highway city Into the night, you by my side, your tear-stained eyes Rogue running down your cheek, but baby
Tonight everything's alright As long as you're here next to me My sweet babe Now let's let go of our Past and our future This night has room for only two, you and me So come and see, I'll show you paradise tonight
Not just 1 kiss, no, not 2, count 'em, 100 I've got a full clip of love for you, baby Hold on to me and I swear I won't let go I'll never let you slip away from me Machine gun kiss, let's just Fall in love
Zaboru continued to sing and as the final note rang out, the courtyard was silent for just a moment before erupting into cheers. Even some of the toughest Hamazou underlings couldn't help but shout in approval.
Ayumi stood frozen, tears welling in her eyes. The song's lyrics resonated with her deeply. It wasn't just a performance—it was a message. Zaboru didn't care about her father's actions. He didn't care about the weight of her family's name. All he cared about was her.
Even Asumi, her sister, let out an exaggerated sigh. "Damn, I'm really jealous right now. If only one of my boyfriends was half as romantic and cool as Zaboru..."
Azai let out another hearty laugh. "Impressive, Zaboru boy! You made a song just for my granddaughter? I approve! You've got guts!"
The crowd chanted for more, demanding an encore, but Ayumi barely heard them. She was still overwhelmed, her heart racing. Her doubts, her guilt, all of it washed away as she realized the truth—Zaboru truly loved her. No matter what.
With renewed determination, she wiped away her tears and smiled brightly. There was no need to overthink anymore.
She was his, and he was hers.
And nothing else mattered.
To be continued.
