Abyss Descension: I Perform Rituals to Evolve In The Apocalyps-Chapter 16: A Group of Revenants
Chapter 16: A Group of Revenants
Kev had his suspicions ever since he defeated the mutated Revenant.
Why was there an empty nucleus in its head?
Did it represent something?
What did it represent?
Could it be that the nucleus was its energy reservoir—the very fuel it needed to survive, move, and hunt?
And if that was true...
What would happen if the nucleus was pulled out while a Revenant was still alive?
Would it die instantly?
To find answers, he conducted his own brutal experiment, and just as he had guessed, he was right.
He had discovered their greatest weakness... an instant way to kill them.
Just pull the nucleus out from their body, and they would immediately perish.
Normal Revenants were simply too weak. Even trauma to the head where the nucleus was located was enough to end them.
Mutated Revenants, however, were built differently.
A lethal blow or two to the head wasn't enough to put an end to their wretched existence.
Stealing the nucleus directly from their heads was the only effective and efficient strategy for dealing with them.

Gah! Gah!
Weak groans echoed from below.
Kev looked down and saw the other two revenants approach.
With a single swing of his massive broadsword, he put them out of their misery.
Kev sliced open the heads of the remaining two Revenants and pulled their nuclei out.
What exactly did a nucleus do? he wondered.
"Show me what it does," Kev muttered as he readjusted the monocle over his eye, bringing its secret divulging function into play.
Contains life force.
Can restore your stamina.
Can increase your lifespan.
Safe to consume.
Kev put the monocle aside and didn't hesitate.
With the monocle confirming they were safe to consume, he flicked all three nuclei into his mouth and popped them beneath his teeth.
A warm sensation surged through his body.
The exhaustion and fatigue that had been gripping him for a while faded, replaced by an invigorating rush—
a revitalizing high that made him feel alive, sharp, and utterly unstoppable.
Kev jumped in place, a small smile curling on his lips.
"Damn, boy... I've never felt better in my life."
He couldn't help but reflect for a moment.
Humans were prey to Revenants,
while Revenants were a nice little source of stamina restoration and extended lifespan for humans.
Such a twisted relationship.
It had no precedent.
And Kev loved every bit of it.
Back on Earth, there was no way to increase one's lifespan.
You could live healthy, avoid junk food, skip fizzy drinks, and steer clear of fried trash.
Even then, you'd perish in less than seventy to eighty years. You could live up to a hundred or so years, if you were lucky.
But in the Abyss?
That wasn't the case at all.
Eternal life was pursuable.
Kev wasn't even surprised by it.
After all, the method of obtaining classes through rituals was akin to evolution itself.
And that was just as tempting as the possibility of obtaining eternal life.
Kev took a deep breath to calm himself down.
"Time to continue the journey," he murmured as he stared ahead.
His flashlight illuminated up to 50 feet with a beam of 800 lumens.
Beyond that, there was only suffocating darkness.
Staring into that darkness would make anyone wonder how many dangers lurked within.
However, Kev didn't have the luxury to feel deterred.
The threat posed by the Revenants in this underground area of the Abyss might be immense, but it couldn't compare to Dakun, who was a powerful class holder.
Kev stepped forward, heading deeper into the tunnel.
A quarter of an hour passed without a trace of danger.
But instead of feeling relieved, he felt disappointed.
The realization that Revenants were a great source of strength and lifespan had shifted what he thought about them, changing how he viewed them.

At first, he had feared them, feeling disgusted and horrified at the mere sight of their rotting figures.
But now?
He view them as nothing more than tools to be harvested.
As he sought to turn them into stepping stones on his path to survival, power, and—if fate allowed—eternal life, he no longer dreaded encountering them.
In fact, he looked forward to it!
Despite moving at a brisk pace for several minutes, the end of the tunnel was nowhere in sight.
'Just how long does this passage stretch?' Kev wondered.
Soon he got his answer as he arrived at the tunnel where there was a turn that led to another tunnel, indicating a bitter truth that made his eyes twitch in frustration.
"I am in a network of tunnels."
Kev realized.
If each tunnel was as big as the one he'd just crossed, it might take hours before he find a way out of this underground space.
Despite his realization, he didn't stop moving.
Ten minutes later, he came to a sudden halt.
A strange vibration tickled the soles of his boots. Faint, but unmistakable. The type of vibration that could only be produced by something massive moving underground.
Kev's eyes narrowed sharply.
A single thought struck him like lightning.
Something was tunneling upward, and it was heading straight for him.
Without hesitation, he kicked off the ground and leapt forward.
Boom!
A violent eruption of stone and dust exploded from the ground just behind him.
Pebbles flew like shrapnel everywhere.
A grotesque figure, black as ink and hideous in form, burst from the floor with a furious howl.
Whoosh!
With savage speed and murderous intent, its massive figure burst out of the cloud of dust, barreling through the air toward his seemingly defenseless back like a falling meteorite.
Its claw-like hands, with fingernails as long as kitchen knives, stretched forward in an attempt to pierce his flesh and dig his heart out!
