Before the insectoid started the war, they had dug out such a massive nest underground, easy to defend but hard to attack.
To avoid smoke fumigation and water flooding, countless tunnels, at least a thousand, surrounded the nest, densely packed like a honeycomb.
Of course, not all these tunnels lead directly to the interior of the nest.
